AP students created a musical composition where they combined the ethnic and contemporary characteristics of music. They used both musical (guitars, keys, percussion, etc) and non-musical (pots and pans, tables and chairs, sounds of nature, etc) instruments that can be found inside their homes.

BETTER

“Better” is a bright and emotional song that represents our experiences during the new normal and how we can make it better by changing ourselves in order to brave through it. The song uses both ethnic (Kulintang) and contemporary (guitar, bass) instruments as well as non-musical instruments (Sounds of animals and nature, electric fans and utensils). The music is composed in a way that the listeners will feel what we want to convey. The music also has different sounds of nature in order to represent the Luzon Rainforest, which is one of the most threatened rainforests here in the Philippines. We used the sounds of crickets and birds like the Maya and the Philippine Eagle to give this feel. We chose these sounds to tell a story about what is happening around us, and to spread awareness that we must take care of what is given to us. The title, “Better”, has two meanings behind it. First is being better, which is self-explanatory. It means that you are changing who you are and stepping out of your comfort zone. The other meaning is BET-ter, since you want to change yourself to make yourself and the world better. You need to bet on yourself that no matter what happens, you’ll be better. Just like in our lyrics “Be a better you for someone else”. We can help make the world better starting with ourselves. There is a saying that “Action speaks louder than words” if you want to be better, you need to be a BET-ter in order to change and improve yourself and your surroundings. The lyrics that we wrote are connected not only to the driving question but in our reality as well. We want our listener to realize what is happening in order to change. We want to share to everyone that it is alright to change, as long as it is the better versions of yourselves and it is in the right way.
